Capstone & DCIM reflections

As I wrap up this course and the DCIM program overall, I’ve been thinking about what lessons will actually stick with me once the assignments and due dates are behind me. The two biggest takeaways I’m leaving the program with are: the importance of building a strong personal brand and the need for my social media presence to match that brand. During my capstone research, I especially learned how true those two statements are. Still, this course really pushed me to understand why they matter so much — not only for career opportunities, but for how I present myself on digital platforms.

The importance of your personal brand

The first major lesson is the importance of creating a personal brand that feels authentic. Before taking these classes, I never thought about myself as a brand — that always sounded like something influencers or business owners had to worry about.

But throughout the course, I realized that everyone has a personal brand, whether they shape it purposefully or not. Employers, collaborators, and even strangers form impressions based on what we share, how we communicate, and the values we show through our online behavior. Building a personal brand is about understanding what you stand for and consistently reflecting it. One thing this course helped me with was recognizing what I want my brand to be: professional, creative, and reliable.

The importance of a social media presence

The second takeaway is closely tied to the first: your social media presence needs to match the brand you’re building. This isn’t surprising to me. As an aspiring sports journalist, I’ve looked at professional journalists’ social media presence and seen what they’ve done to build a solid following.

You have to be consistent with your posts because then people will know what your brand is, and they will follow you. As the world becomes more dependent on social media, having a social media presence that represents your brand is key.

What I’ve learned

Overall, this course helped me understand digital communication not just as something I consume, but as something I actively shape. I’ve grown more confident in how I present myself and more aware of the choices behind my online presence.

These are long-term skills that I will carry with me as I move into future jobs, collaborations, and personal projects. Looking back, I can honestly say that this course taught me how to navigate the digital world with more intention and self-awareness.
